A LITTLE HISTORY
On September 22, 1878, the young Scottish writer and author
Robert Louis Stevenson departed by foot from Monastier
sur Gazeille (Haute Loire) with his mare Modestine. 12
days, 220 km and many adventures later, he arrived at
St Jean du Gard. His travel diary, titled "Travels
With a Donkey in the Cevennes" and published in 1879,
has been read and appreciated by generations of readers
in the same way as "Treasure Island" and "Dr.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde".
TODAY,
the traces of Stevenson are followed enthusiastically
by numerous hikers, with or without a donkey.
The association "Sur le chemin de R.L. Stevenson"
was founded in 1994: its aim is to promote this itinerary
to a network of tourist offices and establishments.
The Stevenson sites propose accomodation, restauration,
donkey renting, attendance on hikes, etc... What they
have in common: they can all be found on or near the Stevenson
Trail (GR 70) and co-operate to make sure travellers enjoy
a veritable experience. For further details look at the
following link. You will be very welcome at all the sites
on your way! |
